Empowering Inclusion: Engaging Community Activities for Disabled Adults

What are community activities?

The term “community” can refer to quite a large range of different groups. This could describe anything from a small town to a religious group, or even a sports team or club. Communities are a great way to help support like-minded individuals and promote togetherness among those sharing similar interests or experiences. They are a great opportunity for socializing, making friends, and providing contentment knowing you are not alone.

Communities are especially helpful for adults living with a disability. In the United States, reports from 2021 show there are over 42 million American adults with some type of disability. These disabilities can include a variety of limitations including physical, medical, developmental, or learning disabilities. Having a disability or disorder can be restricting and limiting to important aspects of a person’s life, such as education, working, and personal relationships.

What are some examples of community activities for the disabled?

Due to the challenges disabled adults face in their daily life, community activities are created to provide additional physical or emotional support. These activities are fantastic ways for the disabled to not only enjoy common adventures but to socialize with others in their situation. They are also great for giving disabled adults the tools to better integrate with non-disabled individuals and to create an inclusive environment.

Some of these activities include the following:

-Special Olympics- sports leagues, teams, or clubs

-Field Trips- tour groups to visit places such as museums, historical sites, or parks

-Religious Communities- such as churches or faith-based groups

-Recreational Events- Theater or plays, sporting events, music concerts, or shopping malls

-Employment Assistance- Support for finding and maintaining a job

-Curriculum Support Classes- Academic groups providing additional educational support

-Clubs- ranging from academic (such as chess or cultural club), or recreational clubs

Although physical disabilities can mostly or completely prevent adults from working, research shows that over 75% of disabled adults believe employment is accessible to them. Similar research shows that over the past decade, special education services have increased in the United States. There are countless disability foundations and organizations across America to help support disabled adults in many ways. Helping disabled adults into the workforce or through education, for example, can also help them integrate socially into society and provide a chance to make friendships or relationships.

How to get involved?

In the age of social media and online platforms, getting involved in various community activities and organizations has never been easier. Reaching out to local schools, organizations, groups, or communities can show your interest in assistance. Whether you know someone personally with a disability or are looking to give back, volunteering or devoting your time to these communities is an excellent way to show support.

One of the most essential components of well-being is having meaningful friendships and the ability to connect with others on a personal level. Disabled adults may find it challenging to attain these goals- that’s where Focus EduSolutions can help. Our new phone app, Hello, It’s Me was made with the disabled community in mind for coaching them through establishing and maintaining various relationships. The creation of Hello, It’s Me began because of the pandemic and the uncertainty most of us felt. We recognized the effects quarantine and social distancing had on society, especially those with disabilities. Connecting with others, especially those who may share your struggles, can boost your abilities to interact and create friendships.
