Online Dating Tips for the IDD Community

Dating and maintaining relationships can be a challenge, especially if you belong to the IDD community. In our digital age where social media and the internet have allowed people from anywhere to connect, many more doors of possibility have opened. Online dating has become a popular way to meet new people, with the disabled population included. Here are some tips for online dating to consider next time you try a new site or app.

Stay safe- don’t immediately provide personal information

This tip is the most important- although online dating is a great tool and many people find success in it, safety is the number one priority. When creating a profile, do not include any personal or sensitive information like your bank account details or your home address. Many include a generalized location, such as the city or state, but leave your residence off your profile. Do not list a phone number- only give out your number if you have been talking with someone for a longer period and they earn your trust.

Only agree to meet in a public area or bring someone with you

After interacting back and forth with someone for a while, you will likely both want to meet each other in person if you live close to each other or have started a romantic relationship. While it could be the start of something great, it is essential to remember safety first. Only agree to meet in a public setting where many people are going to be. Meeting somewhere like a mall in the daytime is a good place to start. Requesting to bring a friend may be an option as well as not feeling alone or uncomfortable.

Be mindful of other’s conditions and accommodations

There are dating apps and sites specifically for the IDD community to connect, which is a great way to help others interact in a more comfortable setting. Some people may not want to discuss in detail the nature of their disability, while others may be open to sharing. If you do get to the point where you are considering meeting up with someone in person, ensure all handicap accommodations are met to fit their needs.

Be open to making friends even if you are looking for a romantic relationship

Dating websites are intended to create romantic relationships. However, it is likely the first person you connect with may not be a match for you. That is perfectly okay, but perhaps a friendship will be made. Meeting people you like but aren’t romantically interested in is a great way to start new friendships. You may not find a boyfriend or girlfriend right away, but you may make some new friends along the way.

Don’t be afraid to include all your hobbies and interests

Many people will refrain from including some of their hobbies and interests on their dating profiles out of fear of being judged. For example, someone may be really into board games or cartoons but may not include them because they think they won’t align with other people’s interests. It can be intimidating to put yourself out there to others, but showing the real you is important for people to get to know you.
