Even if you don’t consider yourself a creative person, it’s always fun to try new projects and explore new hobbies. This year, many inches of snow have fallen across the country, and what better way to spend time than to get creative while you’re stuck inside on a snowy day? Below are some fun ideas for adults in the IDD community to try and express themselves through easy and exciting projects!
This one is common but give painting a try!
While painting is a very popular art form, it’s a great way to relax and incorporate color into your world. There are many different methods of painting to try, whether it be acrylics, watercolors, and making canvas paintings to hang up in your home. Your art says a lot about you and is an exciting way to share your emotions through your artwork. Get some colored paper or even a small easel and explore your talents with a paint brush.
Make jewelry to wear or share with friends
Making different pieces of jewelry is also a calming hobby. Whether it’s earrings, bracelets or necklaces, going through colored beads with interesting textures and materials can be a great way to spend a night at home. There are thousands of beads available at craft stores, making for endless designs to try at home. It can be soothing to organize your beading and string as well. Make some for yourself, friends, or family or even give some as gifts!
Make a scrapbook with your favorite pictures and stickers
Scrapbooking is a time-consuming but very enjoyable activity. Collect and look through pictures reflecting fun and special memories and grab some of your favorite stickers to add. Cut out some of your favorite color paper and glitter and make a book that you can have as a keepsake. Be sure to take pictures when you go on trips, attend events, or hang out with friends so that you can add more pictures.
Create paper flowers
With Spring coming soon, many will be looking to add flowers to their home. Flowers can be expensive and we may forget to water them. Creating flowers out of paper will make them last, and be a nice craft project to work on. Just get some lightweight paper or tissue paper in the color of your choice, and fold the paper together until you get the shape you want. Twist the bottom with green wire for the stem and hand out to friends, or decorate your home.
Redecorate your home space
While this option technically isn’t a craft, it is still a super fun way to liven up your environment to create a newly refreshed space. Try moving some lightweight furniture around, or get a new bed set to complement the season. Check out some new, affordable wall art to hang up to add some flare to your room- you will be surprised how revitalized you feel after!
Make some greeting cards to give out to family and friends
Creating your own greeting cards allows you to create anything on blank paper. If you know someone with a birthday coming up, or you need some cards for a holiday, making your own cards can save money and be a fun new project. Add your favorite colors, maybe some glitter, and don’t forget a nice message inside!
Take a quick trip to your local craft store and enjoy walking through the isles to see what you can create and what your next project will be. Grab some friends or work on a craft on your own the next time you are looking to explore a new hobby! For more ideas, check out our other blogs at www.hello-itsme.com.
