5 Treatment Plans Commonly Used for Learning Disorders

There are many types of learning disorders, including Dyslexia or Dysgraphia. While various learning disorders may impact different areas of learning, many can have similar treatment options to help improve a student’s overall learning quality. It is always best to speak with your primary care doctor for an accurate diagnosis if you have a disability. Doctors will evaluate and then decide on which care plan fits the patient best. It is important to only take instructions from the health care professionals to get the best result out of a treatment plan. While learning disabilities cannot be cured, they can be greatly improved with proper action.

Here are some common ways to help a student who may have a learning disability:

Seek extra academic assistance in school

Some students take more time on assignments or lessons than other students. They may take longer to process and comprehend certain concepts. Being receptive to extra help outside of school, such as tutoring or meeting with teachers, can help provide additional time for the student to understand class material. It may also reduce pressure on the student so that they do not feel rushed or that they may be falling behind in class.

Considering counseling options

While some may be hesitant to attend counseling or therapy, it can be applicable and helpful in helping with academics. Students with learning disabilities may feel overwhelmed and disorganized with their emotions. Having time to sort out those feelings verbally is a great way to alleviate stress and focus more on their education.

Speech or language therapy options

While this doesn’t apply to all learning disorders, it can help significantly for those who have difficulty speaking, comprehending social cues, and learning language to better communicate with others. Speech therapy can begin at a very young age if a child shows signs of talking difficulty or forming words. Starting speech therapy early may help improve their learning ability as they get older.

Joining programs or special education services

Similar to receiving additional academic help, specific programs designed for learning disorders and special education services can help students improve academically. It is also a great way to not only socialize with other peers but to feel comfortable being surrounded by others who can relate to their learning disorder. Special education programs provide extra help with speech, communication, academic concepts, and even physical activities.

Consulting with a doctor for medication options

Some doctors may suggest certain medications to help reduce the anxiety that may come with a learning disorder. It is important for students to not take any medication unless it was prescribed to them personally by their physician, and to only take what is directed or recommended by their doctor. Always speak to a doctor first before taking any medications for yourself or your child to see which option may be best.
